Want super cool senior pics and lots of freebies including cash and a new iTouch?? We are now accepting applications for 2011 Captures by Erin Senior Reps! To participate, your session must be completed between August 2010 and November 2010. Feel free to tell your friends about the rep program as I have several openings for area schools! More info on our program is here: Senior Rep Details
We are looking for outgoing students with positive attitudes that can represent our studio well. There is a limit of 4 reps per area school. Girls and guys have equal opportunity! Please send contact info and snapshot plus a bit about you (interests, hobbies, favorite subject, what you’d like to do after high school, etc.) to info@capturesbyerin.com.
Today’s YouTube Tuesday is brought to you by my seven year old son, Aidan. It’s amazing what you’ll find while cleaning your hard drive. Hmm. I’m not sure whether to admire his creativity or be scared of it… :)
Is your child model material?? We are upgrading our website and expanding our portfolio and need your adorable children to help!
To be considered, your child must be between the ages of 6 months and 13 years old. Send a non-professional picture with their name, current age, address, and phone number to info@capturesbyerin.com. You have from now until August 1, 2010!! Following the deadline, I will have a panel of judges (all professional photographers but NOT myself) narrow the images down and the finalists will be posted on our blog to be voted on by the general public. The TWO models with the most votes win!
Each winner will be featured in our blog and website as the new fresh face of Captures by Erin. You are not required to purchase anything from Captures by Erin but winners will have the option to purchase additional products at VIP pricing. You will receive a complimentary session, gift sized accordion album, and 5×7 print.
Sessions will take place in September in the Fort Worth area. The location will be chosen by me (based on the project for which your child is chosen). You will be contacted after winning to make arrangements.
Send in those pictures and watch the blog for more info!

Shame on you, last minute shoppers! The phone has been ringing off the hook for bluebonnet sessions but time has run out and the blooms are fading fast! Eek! To accommodate everyone, we’ve decided to do mini sessions on Saturday morning (April 24) in our favorite bluebonnet and indian paintbrush field in southwest Fort Worth. The session is limited to 30 minutes only so please plan on immediate family or just the kiddos.
Each session is priced at $250 and will include a slideshow set to music and your choice of 3 digital negatives for email, facebook, and printing.
Please call 817-361-6788 to reserve your spot. I will begin returning calls on Thursday afternoon to set appointments in the order they are received. Please no emails or facebook messages!
May 2, 2010 - 6:08 pmFort Lauderdale Child Photographer - You are so lucky to have bluebonnet flowers. Having a mini session in that field would be spectacular.
May 7, 2010 - 12:09 pmMeg Goodman - Grand Rapids Child Photographer - Gosh, I just want to lay down in that field and daydream away the afternoon! Thanks for posting such a lovely serene image.
I love love love my location for bluebonnets this year! The field we photograph in is off the beaten path with no traffic. It’s not only beautiful but natural with trees and lots of room to run safely! This little guy definitely took advantage of the wide open spaces. At 18 months, he was on the move and busy busy! He reminded me so much of my guys at that age. So fun!
While I don’t specialize in macro photography, it truly is something I consider WAY cool. The curves and textures of different objects go completely unnoticed until you’re able to get up close. The most boring subject can turn into something abstract and beautiful!
I’ve had my 100 mm macro lens for about 2 years now and I admittedly don’t get it out as often as I should. It also makes a great portrait lens too though so I really have no excuse. I’m trying harder. Ideally you should have fancy light setups, tripods, backgrounds, etc. but for these I just used the window in my studio. Sure there is vignetting and shadowing but I don’t really mind.
My husband used to bring me flowers quite a bit until I told him I was too practical for that. Now he brings me camera equipment. lol Every once in awhile, I will get a wild hair and pick up a beautiful bouquet at Costco though. Then I’ll call him and thank him for the gorgeous flowers he bought me. lol
Shooting for myself is something I’m making time for lately. Even if it’s not specifically macro – just doing something beyond the norm. Getting out of my usual surroundings. Even if it’s just once a month, I highly recommend it.
Saturday we met a very sweet family who drove from Dallas for studio portraits. Beautiful Katie had an amazing amount of energy and was a big help in getting 5 month old ZuZu’s attention! She was absolutely enthralled with her big sister! They were as pretty as can be – well really, the whole family is photogenic! What a fun afternoon!
Originally my way cool thing to blog about was going to be the iPad. YES it is more than an oversized iPod Touch! I haven’t quite figured it out yet though since my husband is holding it hostage and not sharing. Instead, I’ve found some way cooler stuff that didn’t even come from a store. They came from our own Grandma Rosie’s farm house in the Ozarks and they will make you way more jealous than a lousy iPad. Grandma Rosie is my husband’s grandmother and my six year old’s great grandmother and we were able to visit her this past weekend.
There is so much to photograph at Grandma’s. From the beautiful mountains, unique barns, wildflowers galore, and the greenest grass you’ve ever seen. Exhibit 1: and proof I was there. (Enjoy it – I hate being in front of the camera.) By the way, I got major shin splints from this hike.
Hey mom. This is called a C-O-W. We don’t pet these. (That’s another blog.)
Photographers, look at that moss. How’d you like that as a background? Gorgeous huh?
But even more than the beauty of the environment are the stories. There is so much history in that land and Rosie has done such a wonderful job archiving it. Her home is covered in pictures and relics some over 100 years old and each has a tale to go with it. She has stories of ghosts and previous owners and family history that could easily make best sellers.
Note the date on this wedding photograph. They look so young and scared to death!
Rosie’s craft room is so cool. The light through the windows streams out over everything – old paperbacks, plants and flowers, built ins full of bobbles, pin cushions, and quilt squares. My macro and I had a good time.
I will have to show off some of the beautiful quilts she has created here. Absolutely amazing. Until then, happy Wednesday and don’t forget to appreciate your loved ones, your family, and all of the history that has happened before you!
April 8, 2010 - 10:07 amDarlene Cates - Friendswood Photographer - I love the images you captured - I miss my grand parents and wish they were still here. What a wonderful time for your family to get together - in such a beautiful spot.
April 9, 2010 - 4:16 pmwillowdawn | Whidbey Island Photographer - You are so right - WAY cooler than an iPad (which I refuse to believe if anything more than an iTouch on steroids! But don't hate me for that... I'm a Mac girl through and through.)
Love all the little details you captured, but mostly the old wedding photo. I love thinking that one day, 80-90 years from now, someone will be holding photographs that we created.
April 9, 2010 - 11:07 pmMelissa - Love these! We go to the Ozarks every year. She looks like a sweet, sweet lady!
The long weekend has really put me behind on editing so while I’m catching up, I wanted to show you one of my recent newborn sessions! Gabbi was born breach and is one of the most flexible newborns I have ever photographed! She was so tiny and sweet and slept almost all the way through our session in Gabbi’s home. Here are a few of my favorites:
April 5, 2010 - 10:13 pmSarah - So absolutely precious Erin! You are so gifted.
April 6, 2010 - 8:08 amMelissa - Beautiful! I sure wish you lived closer. If you ever come to Santa Fe I want you to photograph our family! Consider it a business trip!
April 6, 2010 - 1:01 pmErin - Melissa, Santa Fe is one of my very favorite places on earth! Next time we are there, you have a deal!
April 6, 2010 - 1:09 pmMelissa - These are just amazing. So soft and sweet. Love your processing.
July 26, 2010 - 11:14 pmMindy - Thank you so much for capturing these sweet moments of my little angel!!! Your work is amazing and I am truly grateful for such wonderful photos to remember how tiny and precious she is! I can't wait for another session! (thanks to all of you for your sweet comments!)
This is a little bit “way cool” and a little bit of a confession. I hesitated to write about this because I never ever want to admit to wasting time on anything! Sometimes though, a girl just has to veg! So pull up a Diet Coke and put your feet up while I enlighten you and MAYBE I can drag you into my obsession as well.
Here ya go:
I’m sure some of you know what this is. Especially some of my photographer friends who love to obliterate me and make me feel dumb (like I need any help). It’s an iPhone app called Words With Friends. It’s sort of like laid back Scrabble I guess. The best part about it is you can have multiple games – like 15 or something – going on at the same time. You can also just play whenever you want! I haven’t moved in about 3 days with some of my games… mainly because I’m losing but that’s a whole other personal issue.
By the way, notice I’m beating my husband in this game. Just saying.
While I’m waiting for an oil change, at the orthodontist, sitting in the carpool lane at school, etc. I have a nifty little game to pass the time. Yep – that’s the only time I play! I am not wasting any time!!!! :D Oh there is a chat feature as well so you can say, “Ooo nice one.” Or, “Dang! Ouch!” ”No way!! Quey is not a word!” Really fun! Incidentally, “quey” IS a word, my friends. Oh yes indeedy.
SO indulge me and add the app (it’s FREE) and add me! I’m eptexy on there. That’s E for Erin, P for Potter and T for Tex… ok not so sophisticated. DO EET!
